Who is Ayatollah Alireza Arafi? Iran's New Interim Leader After Khamenei's Death
Iran's Leadership Transition Following Khamenei's Death
Tehran: In a significant political shift, Iran has appointed Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as the interim leader following the assassination of long-serving Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a US-Israeli airstrike.
Khamenei, who had been at the helm since 1989 after the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, was killed in an attack on his residence in Tehran, as confirmed by Iranian authorities.
In the wake of this announcement, the Iranian government revealed that a three-member council would manage the country's leadership during this transitional phase. This council includes President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and a jurist from the Guardian Council, according to reports from the IRNA news agency.
As per Iran's constitution, this council will take on leadership responsibilities until the Assembly of Experts, an 88-member clerical body with significant authority over the nation’s political framework, appoints a new Supreme Leader.
Ayatollah Arafi, a prominent Shia cleric and Islamic jurist, was born in 1959 in Meybod, Iran. He has been leading Iran’s Centre for the Management of Islamic Seminaries and has directed the esteemed Qom Seminary since 2016. Additionally, he is a member of the influential Guardian Council, which is responsible for vetting legislation and supervising elections.
From 2008 to 2018, he served as the President of Al-Mustafa International University and has been a permanent member of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution since 2011.
