Diplomatic Engagement Amid Rising Tensions

New Delhi: On Saturday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in separate phone discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, as tensions escalated in the Middle East following a coordinated military operation by the US and Israel against Iran.

Jaishankar also connected with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Kuwait's Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and Bahrain's Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani.

In his dialogue with Araghchi, Jaishankar expressed India's significant concerns regarding the recent developments in Iran and the surrounding region.

He shared on social media, "Had a telecon with Iranian FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi this evening. Shared India’s deep concern at the recent developments in Iran and the region."

During his conversation with Sa'ar, Jaishankar emphasized India's advocacy for dialogue and diplomacy to alleviate rising tensions.

He and Saudi Foreign Minister Al Saud discussed the current situation in the Gulf, highlighting India's interests in regional peace and the welfare of its citizens abroad.

Jaishankar noted, "Was apprised of the situation in Qatar. Value his assurance on the well-being of the Indian community," referring to his talk with the Qatari Prime Minister.

He also mentioned discussing the evolving Gulf situation with UAE's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, expressing India's concerns over the escalating conflict and appreciating his commitment to the Indian community's welfare.

In retaliation to the US-Israel offensive, Iran has launched military strikes targeting American and Israeli bases across the region, including locations in Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced the military action against Tehran, urging the Iranian populace to 'take over' their government, claiming it might be their only opportunity for generations.

The joint strikes followed unsuccessful negotiations between Washington and Tehran regarding Iran's nuclear program.

Reports from Iranian state media indicate that at least 57 individuals lost their lives in a girls' school in southern Iran due to the US-Israel strikes.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India expressed deep concern over the recent events in Iran and the Gulf region, urging all parties to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritize civilian safety.

The MEA stated, "Dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and address underlying issues. Sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states must be respected."
