Moscow Announces a Temporary Ceasefire

In a significant development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a three-day suspension of strikes on Kyiv, as confirmed by the Kremlin on Saturday. This decision coincides with the arrival of US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Moscow, who are aiming to revive stalled negotiations to resolve Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov informed the media that the ceasefire would commence at midnight and is linked to the envoys' planned visit to Kyiv, which is set for Sunday.

As both sides ramp up aerial assaults nearly four and a half years after the invasion began, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Friday that Ukraine would also pause airstrikes during the US officials' visit, urging Moscow to reciprocate.

The US's efforts to mediate an end to the conflict, which has persisted for five years, have lost traction as attention has shifted towards the ongoing war with Iran. The last visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Moscow was in January, where they met with Putin, marking their first trip to Kyiv.

Upon their arrival, the US delegation was welcomed by Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who shared images of their meeting at the airport with the caption, 'Welcome to Moscow Peacemakers.'

Despite the diplomatic overtures, Russia has escalated its bombardments on Kyiv and other cities, taking advantage of Ukraine's limited air defense capabilities.

Escalating Attacks Amid Diplomatic Efforts

On Friday, a Russian drone strike targeted a key government building in Kyiv—the headquarters of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), which plays a crucial role in conducting operations within Russia.

Ukraine has retaliated with long-range strikes aimed at Russian military installations, oil refineries, and e-commerce centers, attempting to weaken the Kremlin's military efforts and economic stability.

Zelenskyy Connects Russian Strikes to US Envoys' Visit

The air conflict has intensified as both nations struggle for ground along the extensive 1,250-kilometer front line. Russia has increasingly deployed fast-moving, jet-powered drones, and air raid sirens have become a common sound in Kyiv.

In a social media update on Saturday, Zelenskyy reported that Russia had conducted overnight strikes on Kyiv and Boryspil international airports, suggesting these attacks were a response to the upcoming US visit.

"These strikes on the airports are clearly a reaction to the discussions regarding the potential use of an aircraft by the US to travel to Ukraine," he stated.

"We are aware of this Russian action and will adjust our operations next week concerning Russian airspace, which has become perilous due to our drones and missiles. However, we will ensure that our diplomatic efforts remain unthreatened."

Casualties from Russian Strikes

Recent Russian assaults resulted in the deaths of five individuals and injuries to five others at an industrial site in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, according to local military administration head Oleksandr Hanzha. The deceased were identified as workers at the facility, including a locksmith, electrician, plumber, and machinist.

Additionally, a 62-year-old man sustained injuries, and several residential buildings were damaged in a separate attack in the Nikopol district.

Russia's Ministry of Defence reported strikes on two metallurgical plants in the region, labeling them as significant suppliers for Ukraine's military production.

In another incident, two individuals were injured in an overnight attack in Kyiv's region, with a fire caused by a strike partially destroying a nine-story residential building.

Russian forces also targeted a shopping center in Mykolaiv with drones, causing damage and igniting fires, resulting in injuries to a 72-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl.

Emergency responders faced repeated threats from further strikes while attempting to manage the situation.

According to Ukraine's air force, Russia launched ballistic missiles from its Rostov and Voronezh regions and deployed 167 attack drones overnight, with Ukrainian defenses successfully intercepting or neutralizing 128 of them.

In a separate report, Ukrainian strikes injured three individuals, including a 14-year-old girl, in Russia's Belgorod border region, while Russia claimed to have shot down 53 Ukrainian drones overnight.
