Indo-French Military Collaboration Kicks Off


New Delhi: A collaborative military exercise between India and France commenced on Thursday, focusing on improving operational coordination and joint operations in a sub-conventional setting, according to officials.


The eighth iteration of the biennial 'Exercise Shakti' is taking place at Camp Larzac, La Cavalerie in France.


The Indian Army's contingent consists of 90 personnel, primarily from a battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, along with additional members from various arms and services.


The French side is also represented by 90 personnel from the 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade (13 DBLE), as stated by a senior official.


'Exercise Shakti' serves as a bilateral training initiative aimed at enhancing interoperability, operational coordination, and mutual understanding between the two armies.


This year's edition emphasizes joint operations in a sub-conventional environment, adhering to Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, with training set in semi-urban areas.


The opening ceremony featured notable dignitaries, including Brig Veeresh Thapar, India's military attaché in France, and Col HV Kalia, the commander of the Indian contingent.


On the French side, Col Benjamin Brunet, Commander of the 13 DBLE, and Lt Col Castillo, the Deputy Commander, were present.


Both sides expressed their best wishes to the troops involved and conveyed confidence that the exercise would enhance cooperation and mutual respect between the Indian and French armed forces.


The dignitaries emphasized that 'Exercise Shakti' would not only bolster the operational readiness of both armies but also significantly contribute to the strengthening of the Indo-French defense partnership.


Throughout the exercise, troops will participate in joint tactical drills, exchange best practices and operational insights, and build camaraderie and trust. The exercise's conclusion will reaffirm the shared commitment of India and France to peace, stability, and global security.
