Strengthening Ties at the BRICS Summit

New Delhi: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of the Philippines convened during the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam, where they reached a consensus to enhance their bilateral relations.

The leaders expressed their contentment with the advancements in cooperation across various sectors and committed to furthering collaboration in areas such as defense, security, trade, investment, space, railway infrastructure, fintech, education, tourism, science and technology, innovation, and cultural exchanges, as noted in a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

They agreed to bolster their bilateral relationship under the Strategic Partnership established in August 2025 during President Marcos's state visit to India. PM Modi welcomed the Philippines' decision to join the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.

The discussion also covered regional and global matters of shared interest, reaffirming their dedication to enhancing cooperation within the framework of their Strategic Partnership.

Present at the meeting were National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and other officials.

Before their discussions, both leaders exchanged warm greetings, with President Marcos introducing PM Modi to his delegation.

Earlier that day, President Marcos participated in a session at the BRICS Summit focused on 'Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.'

Both leaders also posed for a family photo alongside other BRICS member and partner country leaders, as well as heads of international organizations, on the second day of the summit.

India, as the BRICS chair for 2026, is hosting this two-day summit, which gathers leaders from BRICS nations, partner countries, and outreach invitees.

The BRICS group includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates, with partner countries such as Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

President Marcos also attended a gala dinner hosted by PM Modi for visiting dignitaries at Bharat Mandapam on Saturday evening.

The Philippines leader arrived in New Delhi on Saturday, where he was welcomed at the airport by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel.

The MEA shared on X, "Warm welcome to President of Philippines, Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr as he arrives in New Delhi to attend the 18th BRICS Summit in his capacity as the current chair of ASEAN. He was received by MOS Anupriya Patel. An important pillar of India’s ‘Act East’ policy, India and ASEAN maintain a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership focused on trade, maritime security and regional connectivity in the Indo-Pacific."
