What Happened When Putin and Kim Jong Un Met in Beijing? Insights from Their Bilateral Talks
Significant Bilateral Talks in Beijing
Beijing: On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un engaged in crucial bilateral discussions in Beijing.
The two leaders convened at the Diaoyutai state guest house after participating in a significant military parade in central Beijing, commemorating the 80th anniversary of World War II's conclusion.
According to the Kremlin's social media update, Putin and Kim shared a vehicle from a formal reception to their negotiation venue. Following a meeting between their respective delegations, the leaders held a private discussion.
Putin extended an invitation for Kim to visit Russia again, building on the North Korean leader's previous trip in 2023.
As the talks commenced, Putin acknowledged the courage and valor of North Korean soldiers who fought alongside Russian forces against Ukrainian advances in the Kursk region.
South Korean intelligence reports indicate that North Korea has dispatched approximately 15,000 troops to Russia since last year, along with substantial military supplies, including ballistic missiles and artillery, to support Putin's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
In his opening statement, Kim remarked that the collaboration between Pyongyang and Moscow has 'significantly strengthened' since the strategic partnership agreement was signed in June of the previous year during a summit in North Korea.
While he did not directly reference the conflict, Kim emphasized his willingness to assist Russia, stating, 'If there’s anything I can do for you and the people of Russia, I will consider it a fraternal duty and will be ready to do everything possible to help.'
This anniversary event in Beijing marks Kim's first attendance at a major multilateral gathering during his 14-year leadership and the first occasion where Kim, Putin, and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have convened at the same location.
Observers are keenly watching to see if Kim will have a bilateral meeting with Xi or even a private trilateral discussion with both Xi and Putin, although no confirmations have been made by any of the involved nations.
In a social media post referencing Xi, former US President Donald Trump remarked, 'Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against The United States of America.'
Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, later responded to Trump's comments, suggesting that there was no conspiracy at play. 'I want to say that no one has been plotting anything; no one was weaving any conspiracies,' he stated.
