Strengthening Ties on Independence Day

Beijing: On Sunday, Chinese President Xi Jinping extended his congratulations to Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, marking the 61st anniversary of the Maldives' independence. He emphasized China's commitment to enhancing a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership with the Maldives.

In his correspondence, Xi highlighted the longstanding friendly relations between the two nations, noting that they have maintained diplomatic ties for over 54 years.

He reminisced about Muizzu's visit to China in 2024, where they agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and work towards establishing a shared future for both nations.

Xi expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Muizzu to strengthen their traditional friendship, enhance practical cooperation, and further develop the China-Maldives partnership for the benefit of both peoples, as reported by the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Additionally, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi communicated with his Maldivian counterpart, Iruthisham Adam, affirming Beijing's readiness to implement the significant agreements made by the two leaders, align development strategies, and deepen high-quality Belt and Road Initiative cooperation.

Muizzu, who won the presidency in September 2023 with an anti-India stance, visited China in early 2024, signing 20 agreements, including a defense pact, which raised concerns in New Delhi due to the Maldives' proximity to India.

However, Muizzu later moderated his anti-India rhetoric and sought to improve relations with New Delhi amid a severe economic crisis in the Maldives.

He made two visits to India in 2024, first to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony and then for a state visit, where he acknowledged India's crucial role in assisting the Maldives with its economic difficulties.

During these visits, discussions centered on financial aid, infrastructure development, trade, connectivity, and enhancing bilateral cooperation. India subsequently announced a significant financial support package to help the Maldives tackle its economic issues.

In July 2025, Modi visited the Maldives at Muizzu's invitation, attending the 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour.
