What Did Trump Say About Modi? Insights from Their Recent Discussion
Trump's Admiration for Modi
Washington: In a recent interview, US President Donald Trump expressed high regard for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, labeling him a "great leader" and a "tough guy" who has held power for over a decade.
During his conversation with Axios, Trump highlighted Modi and China's President Xi Jinping as two of his preferred leaders, noting their significant influence and effectiveness.
"I think Modi is very good. They’ve reported some impressive numbers. He avoids conflicts, which is wise. With a population of 1.5 billion, India is indeed the largest. Modi is a remarkable leader," Trump remarked when asked about his favorite leaders based on their power and effectiveness.
Trump pointed out that the US engages in substantial trade with India, contrasting it with past dealings where he felt the country was taking advantage of the US.
"We conduct a lot of business with them now, but it’s fair. They used to really take advantage of us. I don’t blame them; we had foolish politicians who let that happen. But now, we have a more equitable relationship," he stated.
He added, "They’re not thrilled about it because they used to fare better. So, Modi is great," emphasizing his admiration.
Trump also praised Xi as a leader of considerable stature and confidence.
"If you were to cast a movie about either of them, you wouldn’t find a suitable actor in Hollywood," he quipped.
"Modi, in a unique way, commands great respect. I’ve come to know him better and can say he is quite formidable," Trump continued.
The two leaders met recently at the G7 Summit in France, aiming to mend the strained relations between their nations.
Reflecting on India's political landscape, Trump noted the frequent changes in leadership over the years.
"There were times when leaders would serve for just six months or a year. Then, Prime Minister Modi emerged, and he has been in power for over 12 years, demonstrating stability. He carries a sense of calmness, yet he is undeniably tough," Trump remarked.
He concluded by mentioning Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as leaders he also appreciates.
