US-Sri Lanka Talks on Regional Stability

In Colombo, US Special Representative for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, engaged in discussions with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Thursday. Their talks centered around enhancing bilateral relations and addressing the ongoing crisis in West Asia.

Gor's visit coincides with Sri Lanka's involvement in the US-Israeli conflict against Iran, which has been ongoing since February 28.

During their meeting at the Presidential Secretariat, Gor emphasized the importance of safeguarding crucial maritime routes, securing ports, and fostering beneficial trade relations. This initiative aims to promote a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, as highlighted in a statement from the US Pacific Command.

The discussions also delved into Sri Lanka's stance on the Middle East conflict and the associated challenges, according to a post from the President's Media Division on X.

Following his time in Sri Lanka, Gor is set to visit the Maldives for a five-day trip focused on enhancing cooperation within the Indian Ocean Region.

On March 4, the US military targeted the Iranian frigate Iris Dena, resulting in the deaths of 84 sailors, while 32 managed to escape. Shortly after, another Iranian ship, the Iris Bushehr, attempted to enter Colombo port with 219 sailors on board.

Sri Lanka redirected this vessel to the eastern port of Trincomalee, where 204 sailors are currently being housed at a naval facility near Colombo.
