What Did Sohail Afridi Say About Imran Khan's Son's Speech? A Deep Dive into the Controversy
Sohail Afridi's Accusations Against the Government
In a recent press conference, Sohail Afridi, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, accused the government of misrepresenting a speech made by Kasim Khan, the son of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Afridi claimed that this distortion was a tactic to divert public attention from the government's economic shortcomings.
He emphasized that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had translated Kasim Khan's speech into Urdu to clarify the facts for the public.
Afridi criticized the current federal administration for attempting to shift the blame onto the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, asserting that they were failing to uphold democratic values, human rights, and transparent governance, which are essential for international trade relations.
He reiterated the necessity for Pakistan to achieve GSP Plus trade status, highlighting the importance of meeting international standards.
The Chief Minister expressed concern over the ruling party's political animosity towards Imran Khan, suggesting that the public is increasingly disillusioned with their leadership. He warned that PTI supporters nationwide are ready to protest.
Afridi also raised alarms about alleged human rights abuses, mentioning that Imran Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi, is experiencing health issues while in custody. He condemned the treatment of PTI members in Punjab and Sindh, claiming they are being tortured and detained unjustly.
He denounced the ongoing crackdown against Pashtuns and violence against independent journalists, asserting that the KP government is committed to national development and environmental protection.
Kasim Khan recently addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council, arguing that his father's treatment violates international human rights agreements. Imran Khan has been imprisoned since 2023 for corruption related to undisclosed gifts, serving a 14-year sentence.
Kasim pointed out that Pakistan has obligations under the GSP+ framework to adhere to international human rights standards, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The GSP Plus status, according to the European Union, is a special incentive for developing nations to promote sustainable development and good governance by reducing import duties on a significant portion of their exports.
Kasim claimed that his father's detention is arbitrary, highlighting issues such as solitary confinement and restrictions on family visits, as well as the denial of medical care. He stated that the trial of civilians in military courts breaches these treaty commitments.
In a poignant statement, Kasim remarked, 'My brother and I are not political figures. We never intended to appear before such bodies, but my father's life compels us to act.'
