US Military Targets Oil Tanker Heading to Iran Amid Rising Tensions

The United States has taken decisive action by disabling an oil tanker that was heading towards Iran, intensifying the already high tensions in the region. This military operation, part of a broader naval blockade, follows a series of missile and drone attacks launched by Iran in retaliation. CENTCOM has reported multiple incidents involving commercial vessels since the blockade began, highlighting the escalating conflict. As both sides prepare for potential further confrontations, the situation remains precarious. Read on for a detailed account of the events and their implications.

US Strikes Oil Tanker Near Iran

The United States has successfully disabled an oil tanker that was reportedly en route to Iran, as part of its ongoing naval operations in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), a Hellfire missile was launched from a US aircraft, targeting the engine room of the Botswana-flagged M/T Lexie after the crew allegedly disregarded multiple warnings from American forces. CENTCOM noted that the tanker was navigating international waters towards Kharg Island in Iran when it was struck. The US military has also released video footage purportedly showing the moment of impact. As of now, Iran has not issued any public statement regarding this incident.

CENTCOM explained that the blockade, initiated on April 13, aims to enforce restrictions on vessels entering and leaving Iranian ports. The command reported that the crew of the M/T Lexie failed to adhere to US directives multiple times over a span of 24 hours. Since the blockade commenced, CENTCOM has disabled six commercial vessels and redirected an additional 122.

Escalating Tensions: Iran Responds with Attacks

Iran Launches Fresh Attacks After US Strikes Qeshm Island

This strike on the tanker coincides with heightened tensions between the US and Iran. Iran has initiated a new series of missile and drone strikes across the Middle East, which activated air raid sirens in both Kuwait and Bahrain. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that these attacks were a response to what they termed "blatant aggression" from US forces targeting Qeshm Island.

The IRGC claimed to have executed "precise and intensive missile strikes" on US military installations in Kuwait, warning that any further aggression would provoke a "crushing and decisive response." In response to the missile and drone threats, Kuwait's military has taken action, while Bahrain has activated warning sirens and advised residents to seek safety.

Meanwhile, CENTCOM reported that US and allied forces intercepted several Iranian missiles and drones. The command indicated that two missiles aimed at Kuwait did not reach their intended targets, while three missiles directed at Bahrain were successfully intercepted by US and Bahraini air defense systems. Additionally, the US military conducted self-defense strikes on Qeshm Island and remains on alert for any further threats during the ongoing ceasefire.
