Urgent Action Taken as Forest Fire Threatens Historic Graveyard in Shimla
Forest Fire Near Tara Devi Hills Poses Risk to Heritage Site
Shimla News Network
A significant forest fire that ignited close to the Tara Devi hills is now perilously approaching the British-era graveyard, recognized as one of the oldest colonial sites in the city. Firefighting crews and forest officials are tirelessly working to control the flames, which have already devastated extensive areas of pine forest.
The thick smoke has blanketed nearby neighborhoods, leading officials to issue a warning for residents to remain indoors and steer clear of trekking paths around the cemetery area.
Authorities are concerned that if wind speeds increase, the fire could inflict damage on the historic tombstones and adjacent heritage buildings that date back to the 19th century.
The Forest Department along with the Shimla Municipal Corporation has mobilized extra water tankers and fire engines to curb the fire's expansion.
