UN Secretary General's Urgent Plea

United Nations: In a strong statement, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the recent "military escalation" in the Middle East, emphasizing that continued hostilities could lead to a broader regional conflict with dire implications for civilians and overall stability.

Guterres' remarks were made as the UN Security Council prepared to meet to address the escalating situation in West Asia, following attacks on Iran by the US and Israel, and Iran's subsequent response.

"I denounce the military actions taken today in the Middle East. The aggressive actions by the United States and Israel against Iran, along with Iran's retaliatory measures, threaten international peace and security," Guterres stated.

He urged an immediate halt to hostilities and a return to negotiations, warning that failure to act could result in severe consequences for civilians and regional stability. He called on all involved parties to engage in dialogue promptly.

Guterres reminded all Member States of their responsibilities under international law, including the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any nation.

He reiterated that peaceful resolution of international disputes is the only viable option, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council, led by the United Kingdom, is set to convene to discuss the situation in West Asia. The US is expected to assume the rotating presidency of the influential 15-member Council in March.

Other UN officials also condemned the military actions taken against Iran and the subsequent retaliation. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk expressed his dismay over the strikes, stating that military force is not a solution and only leads to death and suffering.

He highlighted that civilians often bear the brunt of armed conflicts and stressed the importance of adhering to international laws that protect them, calling for accountability for any violations.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed deep concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East, stating that everyone deserves to live free from violence.

"We urge leaders to prioritize dialogue over destruction. The world is watching, and we hope that wisdom will triumph over weapons. Peace is the ultimate remedy," he concluded.
