Drone Attack on St. Petersburg

St Petersburg: On Friday night, Ukraine reportedly executed a drone strike on St Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, along with the surrounding Leningrad region. Russian officials asserted that the drones targeted a local port and oil facilities during the nighttime assault. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared footage showing thick black smoke rising from what he identified as oil infrastructure in St Petersburg and a military site in Kronstadt. He stated, “Last night, our long-range sanctions against Russia over this war reached targets near St. Petersburg. Ukraine's Defense Forces struck port oil infrastructure that generates revenue for Russia's war, and there were also successful strikes on Kronstadt – an important military target,” in a post on X.

Zelenskyy emphasized that the distance from the Ukrainian border to St Petersburg is approximately 850 kilometers. He expressed gratitude to those ensuring Ukraine's precision in executing their long-range sanctions strategy, concluding with, “Glory to Ukraine.”

According to St Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov, the city’s oil terminal was impacted during the recent Ukrainian offensive, as reported by various sources. Additionally, Leningrad region Governor Alexander Drozdenko mentioned that a Ukrainian drone hit the port of Vysotsk, which is known for handling oil, grain, coal, and liquefied natural gas.

This year, Ukraine has escalated its attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. Just last week, a drone strike from Ukraine ignited a significant fire at one of Russia's largest oil refineries located in the southern region. Zelenskyy had previously noted on the Telegram messaging app, "Our long-range sanctions reached two oil refineries in Russia." The Ukrainian offensive has severely disrupted Russian fuel supplies, leading to widespread shortages and long queues at gas stations throughout the country, prompting many regions to implement fuel rationing.

Last month, Ukrainian drones also targeted Moscow, with Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reporting that at least 60 drones were intercepted by air defense systems during what he described as a sustained aerial attack. He noted that one drone caused damage to a facility at the Moscow Oil Refinery.
