Ukraine Intensifies Drone Strikes on Russian Military Targets
Ukrainian Drone Attacks Target Russian Infrastructure
In a significant escalation, Ukraine has executed another long-range drone assault deep within Russian territory, focusing on military and energy facilities near Saint Petersburg and in the Krasnodar Krai region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that these strikes successfully targeted naval arsenals and a military base in Kronstadt, a crucial naval center close to St Petersburg, as well as an oil depot in Krasnodar. He noted that some drones traveled nearly 1,000 kilometers to reach their objectives, highlighting Ukraine's enhanced capability to strike far beyond the front lines.
In response to the attacks, authorities in St Petersburg issued warnings to residents regarding a significant drone threat and potential disruptions to mobile internet services. Russian officials claimed that their air defenses intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones, with local authorities reporting that dozens were shot down in the surrounding Leningrad Oblast. Fortunately, no immediate casualties have been reported. This latest operation follows earlier Ukrainian strikes that reportedly caused damage to an oil terminal and naval facilities near St Petersburg earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Russia announced that its forces had taken control of the settlement of Shevchenko in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv Oblast. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that troops from its northern military grouping secured the village following what they described as decisive operations. This claim remains unverified but indicates ongoing efforts by Russian forces to advance in certain areas of eastern and northeastern Ukraine, despite the largely static front lines.

Both sides have reported new attacks overnight. Ukrainian officials stated that Russian drone and artillery strikes resulted in one death and several injuries in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast region, while a separate drone strike ignited a fire in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Ukraine’s air force indicated that Russia launched 272 attack drones overnight, with most being intercepted before reaching their targets. This renewed escalation follows Russian President Vladimir Putin's rejection of Zelenskyy’s proposal for a direct meeting, indicating that the chances for a diplomatic resolution remain slim as both nations ramp up military operations.
