Ukraine Escalates Drone Strikes Against Russian Targets
Intensified Attacks on Russian Infrastructure
Kyiv: Ukraine is ramping up its offensive against Russia. On Sunday, a Ukrainian drone reportedly struck a passenger train traveling from Moscow to Simferopol. According to Sergey Aksyonov, the head of Crimea, the attack resulted in the death of the assistant driver and injuries to the main driver, as shared in a Telegram update. Simferopol serves as the central city of the Crimea Peninsula, which Russia annexed. Fortunately, all passengers on the train were reported safe, as per Reuters. Russia took control of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, prior to the onset of the current conflict.
In the early hours of Monday, drone raid sirens were activated in Novorossiysk, a significant port city for oil and grain exports in Russia's Krasnodar region, according to global news sources. This is not the first instance of Ukraine targeting Russian infrastructure with drones. Just last week, Ukraine executed a long-range drone strike deep within Russian territory, aiming at military and energy sites near Saint Petersburg and in the Krasnodar Krai region. Reports indicate that several drones crashed into oil storage facilities after Russian air defenses failed to intercept them. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that these strikes impacted naval arsenals and a military base in Kronstadt, a crucial naval location near St Petersburg, as well as an oil depot in Krasnodar. Zelenskyy emphasized that some drones traveled nearly 1,000 kilometers to reach their objectives, highlighting Ukraine's expanding capabilities to strike beyond the front lines.
Meanwhile, Russia has asserted that its forces have taken control of the settlement of Shevchenko in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv Oblast.
