UK Neurosurgeon Suspended for Inappropriate Relationship with Patient
Neurosurgeon's Suspension Following Patient Relationship
A prominent neurosurgeon in the UK has faced suspension from practice after a medical tribunal found him guilty of engaging in a sexual relationship with a patient and improperly prescribing opioid medications without proper documentation. Chirag Patel, who worked at the University Hospital in Cardiff, Wales, received an eight-month suspension following his admission of guilt.
Patel's interactions with the patient, referred to as Patient A, began in February 2019 when he performed surgery to remove damaged spinal disc tissue. He subsequently operated on her again in August 2019 and for a third time in December 2021 when a spinal cord stimulator was inserted. Their relationship developed after the initial surgery and continued throughout her treatment, ultimately leading to complications after their breakup in 2023. Following the end of their relationship, the patient reported the matter to the police and the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
'Negligence Towards Patient Safety'
Once the situation was uncovered, Patel was brought before the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS), where he acknowledged the allegations against him. The tribunal highlighted his 'reckless disregard for patient safety.' In his defense, Patel expressed fear of losing his job, which he cherished, and acknowledged that his decision to continue the relationship was a mistake he now deeply regrets. He stated, 'In hindsight, I realize I should have ended the relationship and been truthful with my employer. At that moment, I felt overwhelmed and unable to terminate it.'
Despite showing remorse and understanding of his actions, the tribunal deemed the eight-month suspension necessary to uphold public trust in the medical profession. The universities of Cardiff and Vale confirmed his dismissal from their institutions. Patel, who holds Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status, also disclosed a financial demand of £11,000 during the proceedings.
