UAE Orders Arrest of 19 Indians Amid Social Media Misinformation Crackdown

Arrests Linked to Misinformation in the UAE

A total of 19 Indians are among 35 individuals facing arrest in the United Arab Emirates for allegedly sharing misleading and fabricated videos on social media, as reported on Sunday. This action comes in light of escalating tensions in the West Asia region.

On Saturday, authorities ordered the arrest of ten individuals, including two Indians, while the following day, an additional 25 arrests were mandated, comprising 17 Indians.

The accused have been directed towards a swift trial process.

Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, the UAE Attorney General, stated that this initiative was a result of extensive monitoring of digital platforms aimed at preventing the dissemination of false information and content that could incite public unrest and threaten stability.

He emphasized that sharing such videos, whether authentic or not, could jeopardize public safety and lead to confusion, potentially providing adversarial media with material that distorts facts and undermines trust in authorities, as well as revealing sensitive aspects of the nation’s defense capabilities.

The ongoing conflict in West Asia escalated on February 28, following a joint operation by Israel and the US aimed at “degrading the capabilities” of the Iranian government.

In retaliation, Iran has targeted Israel and US military installations in the region, as well as major cities in other Gulf nations and various maritime vessels.

Iran has launched over 1,800 missiles and drones at the UAE, marking it as the most targeted nation in this conflict, significantly disrupting travel plans in the financial center, despite the air defense systems intercepting a large number of these threats.
