Turkish Woman Wins Divorce Over Husband's Poor Hygiene
Divorce Case Over Hygiene Issues
In a surprising turn of events, a woman in Turkey has filed for divorce based on her husband's lack of personal hygiene. Typically, relationships may end due to domestic violence or infidelity, but this case highlights a unique reason for separation.
The woman, identified only as A.Y., claimed that her husband rarely bathes and emits an unpleasant odor due to his infrequent bathing habits. Reports indicate that he only brushes his teeth once or twice a week. During the court proceedings at Ankara's 19th Family Court, A.Y. stated that her husband would wear the same clothes for at least five days straight, contributing to the persistent smell.
To support her claims, witnesses, including mutual acquaintances and even some of the husband's colleagues, testified in court, corroborating her statements. The court ruled in favor of A.Y., granting her divorce and ordering her husband to pay 500,000 Turkish Lira (approximately $16,500 or 13.68 lakh rupees) as compensation for his lack of personal hygiene.
A.Y.'s attorney, Senem Yilmazel, emphasized the importance of shared responsibilities in a marriage. She stated that if one partner's behavior makes shared life unbearable, the other has the right to seek a divorce. This case serves as a reminder of the need for individuals to be mindful of their behavior and cleanliness in relationships.
Witnesses further testified that the husband bathed only once every 7 to 10 days and brushed his teeth infrequently, leading to foul odors emanating from his body and mouth. Colleagues even reported discomfort working near him due to the smell. Ultimately, A.Y. decided to end her marriage. This isn't the first instance of such a case; in 2018, a Taiwanese man divorced his wife for only bathing once a year.
