Trump's UFC Event at the White House Faces Backlash from Democrats

President Trump's plan to host a UFC event at the White House has sparked significant criticism from Democratic lawmakers. Scheduled for June 14, the event is part of the 250th anniversary celebrations of the United States. While UFC executives assert that the organization will cover the costs, critics argue that it blends political spectacle with government resources during a time of economic strain. The White House defends the event as a historic occasion, but many question its appropriateness amidst rising living costs. The event promises to be a major spectacle, with thousands of seats and extensive media coverage planned.

Controversy Surrounds Upcoming UFC Event

President Donald Trump’s initiative to host a significant Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event at the White House next month has drawn criticism from various Democratic leaders. Concerns have arisen regarding whether taxpayers will bear the costs of this large-scale event. Scheduled for June 14, the occasion is part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the United States and will feature a temporary UFC arena set up on the White House grounds. Critics argue that this event merges political theatrics with government resources, especially during a period of economic hardship for many Americans. However, UFC officials have clarified that the organization is responsible for all expenses related to the event.

UFC Confirms It Will Fund the Event

In a March interview with a sports business publication, TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of UFC, estimated the event's cost to be around $60 million. UFC CEO Dana White confirmed that the organization would cover the entire financial burden. “No, we’re eating the whole thing,” White stated. “It’s going to be a historic one-of-one fight.” TKO President Mark Shapiro acknowledged that while the company might incur losses, the publicity and exposure would justify the investment. “Other properties would kill to have the opportunity we’re going to have,” Shapiro remarked. “This is going to be enormous in terms of attention.” Construction has already commenced on the South Lawn of the White House, with UFC sharing progress updates and images on social media. The completed venue is anticipated to feature thousands of temporary seats, a cage-side stage, and large screens extending into adjacent public areas. Trump has indicated that the setup will include a “5,000-seat arena right outside the front door of the White House,” with UFC planning to distribute up to 85,000 free tickets across the White House grounds and the nearby Ellipse.

Democratic Leaders Criticize UFC Plans

Numerous Democratic lawmakers and officials have voiced their disapproval of the project, arguing that it conveys an inappropriate message amid escalating living costs. California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office humorously criticized the initiative online, stating: “Mr. President, we just want lower gas prices.” Senator Adam Schiff accused Trump of being “out of touch,” while Representative Jared Huffman condemned the spending associated with White House construction projects and ceremonial displays. In response to the backlash, the White House defended the event. Spokesperson Davis Ingle described it as “one of the greatest and most historic sports events in history” and positioned it as a key part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration. The UFC event is scheduled for June 14, with preliminary fights starting at 4 PM ET and the main card commencing at 8 PM ET. It is expected to be streamed on Paramount+.
