Trump's Heated Call with Netanyahu Amid Rising Tensions in Lebanon
Tensions Escalate Between the US and Israel
During a recent phone conversation, President Donald Trump reportedly expressed his anger towards Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as escalating military actions in Lebanon threatened to disrupt ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran. A report from Axios revealed that Trump criticized Netanyahu for his reckless behavior and cautioned that military strikes on Beirut would further alienate Israel on the global stage. This conversation followed Iran's warning to reconsider its negotiations with the US due to Israel's actions in Lebanon.
Trump allegedly told Netanyahu, “You're out of control. If it weren't for me, you'd be in serious trouble. The world is turning against you.” Netanyahu is currently grappling with significant legal issues, including a long-standing corruption trial involving bribery and fraud allegations, which he denies. Additionally, international scrutiny is increasing regarding Israel's actions and the conduct of those close to Netanyahu.
Trump has previously urged Israeli leaders to grant Netanyahu a pardon for his alleged offenses. Another source indicated that Trump, visibly frustrated, exclaimed, “What are you thinking?” US officials acknowledged Hezbollah's attacks on Israel but noted that Trump felt Netanyahu's recent actions had escalated tensions excessively, particularly with threats to target Beirut and the intensification of military operations in southern Lebanon.
One official mentioned that Trump was also concerned about the rising civilian casualties in Lebanon and criticized Israeli strategies that involved demolishing buildings to eliminate specific Hezbollah leaders. Following their conversation, Trump announced a de-escalation between Israel and Hezbollah, with reports suggesting that Netanyahu was reconsidering plans to attack Hezbollah positions in Beirut. An Israeli official confirmed that such strikes were no longer anticipated.
This exchange was described as one of the most challenging discussions between Trump and Netanyahu since Trump resumed office. Despite their previous close coordination on issues related to Iran and other regional matters, Trump's frustration seemed to arise from fears that the conflict in Lebanon could jeopardize diplomatic relations with Tehran. After the call, Trump attempted to convey a sense of optimism regarding diplomacy, stating on Truth Social that negotiations with Iran were progressing swiftly. Netanyahu later affirmed that Israel would continue military operations in southern Lebanon and would strike Beirut if Hezbollah persisted in its attacks.
