Trump's Controversial Remarks on the Strait of Hormuz Amid Ongoing Tensions
Trump's Statements on Oil and the Strait of Hormuz
Washington DC: On April 3, President Donald Trump made headlines with comments that seemed to target NATO allies, suggesting that the United States would soon take control of the Strait of Hormuz and profit from its oil resources. His remarks followed threats to escalate attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran. Trump expressed on his Truth Social platform, "With a little more time, we can easily OPEN THE HORMUZ STRAIT, TAKE THE OIL, & MAKE A FORTUNE. IT WOULD BE A 'GUSHER' FOR THE WORLD???"
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial maritime passage between Iran and Oman, facilitating the transport of oil and gas from Gulf nations to global markets. Since the onset of the Middle East conflict, this route has been obstructed by the IRGC, following airstrikes by the US and Israel on Iranian targets. Approximately 20% of the world's energy trade transits through this narrow waterway.
On Thursday, India took part in discussions led by the United Kingdom regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri represented India in a virtual meeting that emphasized the significance of maintaining freedom of navigation and unobstructed transit through international waters. The talks saw participation from around 60 nations.
