Trump Supports Russian Oil Delivery to Cuba Amid Energy Crisis

US President Donald Trump has voiced his approval for a Russian oil tanker delivering fuel to Cuba, which is currently facing a severe energy crisis due to a US-led blockade. He emphasized the humanitarian aspect of the shipment, stating that the Cuban people need the oil to survive. Despite concerns about benefiting Russia, Trump framed the decision as essential for the welfare of Cubans. The tanker, carrying around 730,000 barrels of oil, is expected to arrive in Matanzas soon, highlighting the ongoing geopolitical tensions between the US and Cuba.

Trump's Stance on Russian Oil Shipment

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump expressed his approval regarding a Russian oil tanker supplying fuel to Cuba, which is currently facing a significant energy crisis exacerbated by a US-led oil blockade. While speaking to the press during his return to Washington, Trump emphasized the humanitarian necessity of the shipment, stating, “We have a tanker out there. We don’t mind somebody getting a boatload—they need it to survive.”

When questioned about reports suggesting that the US had permitted the tanker to proceed, Trump affirmed, “If a country wants to send some oil into Cuba right now, I have no problem—whether it’s Russia or not.”

According to shipping data, the tanker, which is carrying approximately 730,000 barrels of oil, was located off the eastern coast of Cuba on Sunday night and is anticipated to arrive in Matanzas by Tuesday. Although Cuban state media has reported on the vessel's expected arrival, officials have not yet provided any comments.

This situation arises despite the US government's stringent policies towards Cuba. Under Trump's administration, pressure on Cuba has increased, leading to restrictions on vital oil supplies aimed at instigating political change. However, these sanctions have severely impacted the Cuban populace, resulting in widespread blackouts, fuel shortages, and significant disruptions in healthcare and public transportation.

Cuba has historically been a point of contention in the geopolitical rivalry between the US and Russia, a situation that continues to influence events surrounding the island. Nevertheless, Trump downplayed concerns that permitting the shipment would advantage Russian President Vladimir Putin, framing the decision as essential for the survival of the Cuban people.
