Trump Suggests US Might Seize Iranian Oil Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions
US President's Controversial Remarks
Washington: On Sunday, March 29, President Donald Trump indicated that the United States might consider taking control of Iranian oil resources, specifically mentioning Kharg Island, a crucial export point for Iran. This statement comes as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise. In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump drew parallels between potential US military actions in Iran and previous operations in Venezuela, where US forces took control of the oil sector after ousting President Nicolas Maduro. He remarked, "Honestly, my favorite thing is to take the oil in Iran, but some foolish individuals back in the US question that decision. But they are misguided," he stated.
Regarding the possibility of seizing Kharg Island, Trump noted, "Maybe we take Kharg Island; maybe we don't. We have many options... It would also mean we would need to maintain a presence there for some time." This island is vital as it accounts for approximately 90% of Iran's crude oil exports, and a US takeover could severely impact Iran's economy.
US Military Readiness and Challenges
Can the US Successfully Execute an Operation? Recently, the US has positioned two Marine Expeditionary Units (MEU) that specialize in rapid-response amphibious operations. However, to reach Kharg Island, US forces must navigate through the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently under the control of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This presents a significant risk, as Iranian forces could target US naval vessels as they approach the strait.
Negotiations with Iran
Trump's Comments on Diplomatic Efforts: While speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump claimed that Iran had agreed to send 20 large oil vessels through the Strait of Hormuz as a gesture of goodwill, starting the following day. He expressed confidence in the ongoing negotiations, stating, "We are doing extremely well in discussions with Iran. However, the situation is unpredictable; at times we negotiate, and at others, we have to take military action against them." He added, "I believe we will reach an agreement, but there is always a chance we won't." Trump also reflected on past regime changes in Iran, noting that the previous regimes had been significantly weakened.
Ongoing Middle East Conflict
Current Situation: The conflict in the Middle East has now reached its 30th day, with reports indicating that approximately 3,000 individuals have lost their lives since the war began on February 28, following US and Israeli strikes on Iran. This has led to retaliatory actions from Iran against US military assets and other targets in neighboring Gulf states.
