Trump Seeks Amendments in US-Iran Peace Deal Negotiations
Negotiations for a Peace Deal with Iran
President of the United States, Donald Trump, has reportedly requested several modifications to the agreement that his representatives reached with Iranian officials during recent discussions. The ongoing negotiations aim to finalize a peace agreement to conclude the conflict that began on February 28. Trump is eager to finalize the deal soon but wishes to enhance specific aspects that are crucial to him, particularly concerning Iran's nuclear materials, as reported by Axios, citing two US officials on Sunday. A senior administration figure mentioned, "It's more specifics about how the US gets the material and the timing," referring to enriched uranium.
Additionally, another source indicated that Trump seeks to revise some language regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, through which a significant portion of the world’s energy typically flows.
The US official noted that it would take approximately three days for the Iranians to respond. Earlier today, during an interview with a media channel, Trump stated that the US and Iran are nearing a "very good deal." He suggested that there are two possible outcomes: either a successful agreement or a military resolution. "We're close to a very good deal. If you're going to be in a hurry, you're not going to make a good deal, and slowly but surely, we're getting what we want — and if we don't get what we want, we're going to end it a different way," Trump remarked during an interview with his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump.
He acknowledged that the Iranians are "good negotiators" and emphasized that the US holds "significant leverage" over Iran. On Friday, Trump convened a meeting with his top cabinet members and military officials in the situation room, but it concluded without clear direction on future actions. Axios reported that Trump's request for amendments has initiated another round of negotiations that may extend over several days.
