Trump Proposes New Promenade Near Lincoln Memorial
New Development Plans in Washington, D.C.
President Donald Trump has announced a new development initiative in Washington, D.C., which includes a proposed pedestrian promenade adjacent to the Lincoln Memorial. During a press briefing on Thursday, while the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was being refilled, Trump mentioned the promenade and noted that there were suggestions to name it after him. He remarked, "They want to call it the 'Trump Promenade,' but I don't know if I want to do that. It's going to be beautiful." However, he did not elaborate on the specifics of the project or disclose who was advocating for the name.
The Lincoln Memorial, a significant and frequently visited site in the U.S., is located on the National Mall and managed by the National Park Service. This announcement aligns with Trump's ongoing efforts to enhance beautification and infrastructure projects in the capital as the nation prepares for its 250th anniversary celebrations. The president has consistently emphasized the need for Washington to better represent the country's global standing through the restoration of monuments, improved public spaces, and large-scale construction endeavors.
Overview of Trump's Initiatives During His Second Term
The proposed promenade adds to a growing list of renovation and construction projects introduced during Trump's second term.
Triumphal Arch
One of the notable proposals is a 250-foot monument dubbed the "Triumphal Arch," which is planned near Arlington National Cemetery. Renderings depict a structure similar to Paris' Arc de Triomphe. This project has received the green light from the Commission of Fine Arts and is currently under review by the National Capital Planning Commission.
Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
The administration is also working on renovations for the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Trump had previously expressed concerns about the pool's dirty water and a leaking foundation. Instead of replacing the granite structure, which would cost an estimated $301 million, contractors have been engaged to resurface the basin for around $1.5 million. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has indicated that the landmark should be ready by Independence Day.
White House Ballroom
Plans for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom at the White House were first announced by Trump for 2025. To facilitate this project, the East Wing was demolished. The estimated cost has escalated from $200 million to $400 million, and the project is currently facing multiple legal challenges. A federal judge ordered a halt to construction in March, and another ruling has suspended above-ground work while litigation is ongoing.
Kennedy Center Refurbishment
Renovations at the Kennedy Center are also underway, which include refurbishing marble, replacing seating, and upgrading performance areas. A federal judge recently ruled that Trump had unlawfully added his name to the venue and has prohibited the administration from closing it for renovations.
UFC Arena
In late May, a temporary Ultimate Fighting Championship arena was set up on the South Lawn for an event scheduled for June 14. This structure features an octagon-shaped fighting cage and is designed to accommodate approximately 5,000 spectators.
With the introduction of the "Trump Promenade," the president seems poised to continue transforming key areas of Washington as the nation gears up for its 250th anniversary.
