Trump Extends Ceasefire with Iran Amid Diplomatic Efforts
Ceasefire Extension Announced
On the eve of the expiration of a delicate truce between the United States and Iran, President Donald Trump announced the extension of the ceasefire. He indicated that a "unified proposal" from Tehran is anticipated, while the US military continues its blockade of Iranian ports. Trump stated, "I will extend the ceasefire until their proposal is submitted and discussions are finalized, one way or another." He noted that Pakistan played a significant role in this decision.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump outlined two reasons for his choice: the instability within the Iranian government and a request from Pakistani leaders, including Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He expressed, "Given the fractured state of the Iranian government and upon the request from Field Marshal Munir and Prime Minister Sharif, we have been asked to refrain from attacking Iran until their leaders can present a unified proposal. Therefore, I have instructed our military to maintain the blockade and remain prepared, extending the ceasefire until their proposal is submitted and discussions are concluded." Earlier, Trump had expressed reluctance to extend the ceasefire, warning that military action could commence if an agreement was not reached.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan expressed gratitude to Trump for the ceasefire extension, emphasizing that it would facilitate ongoing diplomatic efforts. In a post on X, Sharif thanked Trump on behalf of himself and Field Marshal Munir for the "gracious acceptance" of Pakistan's request. He expressed hope that both parties would adhere to the ceasefire and work towards a comprehensive peace agreement in the upcoming talks scheduled in Islamabad.
