Trump Advocates for Direct Role in Iran's Leadership Selection Post-Khamenei

In a recent interview, President Trump asserted that he should be directly involved in selecting Iran's next leader following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. He expressed concerns over Mojtaba Khamenei, the slain leader's son, potentially succeeding him, labeling him as a 'lightweight.' Trump emphasized the need for a leader who would foster peace in Iran, while also drawing comparisons to U.S. involvement in Venezuela's leadership changes. As Iran delays announcing Khamenei's successor, tensions continue to rise in the region, particularly with Israel's recent military actions aimed at disrupting the succession process.

Trump's Involvement in Iran's Future Leadership

In a recent interview, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his belief that he should play a direct role in choosing Iran's next leader following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. This statement was made during an eight-minute phone conversation where he discussed military strategies and Iran's political landscape, as reported by a news outlet.

Trump noted that Mojtaba Khamenei, the deceased leader's son, is currently seen as the most probable successor, but he voiced his disapproval of this potential outcome. He stated, “They are wasting their time. Khamenei's son is a lightweight. I have to be involved in the appointment, similar to what I did with Delcy [Rodriguez] in Venezuela.”

He further emphasized that he would reject any new Iranian leader who continues the policies of Ali Khamenei, warning that such a situation could lead the U.S. into further conflict.

“Khamenei's son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” Trump added. As of now, Iran has not disclosed a successor to Khamenei, who was killed in airstrikes amid the ongoing tensions involving the U.S. and Israel.

For several days, Iranian officials have postponed the announcement of the next supreme leader, but recent comments from Iranian politicians indicate that a decision may be forthcoming. Mojtaba Khamenei, known for his hardline stance and connections to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has never held a public office but is widely regarded as the frontrunner to succeed his father.

In a related development, Israel targeted a building in Qom on Tuesday that is associated with the clerical council responsible for selecting Iran's next supreme leader, seemingly aiming to disrupt the succession process.

Trump also drew parallels with Venezuela, where he claimed the U.S. influenced the country's leadership after American forces captured President Nicolás Maduro earlier this year. He mentioned that Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez took power following this operation and referred to Venezuela as “our new friend and partner,” noting that the U.S. received over 80 million barrels of oil as a result of the intervention.
