Deadly Clash Over Gold Mining in South Sudan
Juba (South Sudan): Over the weekend, a violent incident near the capital of South Sudan resulted in the deaths of more than 70 individuals, as confirmed by a police spokesperson on Monday. The conflict arose from disputes related to gold mining activities.
A local journalist reported that a video circulating online depicted numerous bodies lying in an open area, with many other victims believed to have sought refuge in nearby bushes.
The gold mining location at Jebel Iraq in Central Equatoria State has previously witnessed violent confrontations between illegal miners and mining corporations.
Kwacijwok Dominic Amondoc, the police spokesperson, indicated that further details regarding the attack would be provided as they become available.
He stated, "What I can confirm is that unidentified gunmen targeted the Jebel Iraq gold mine, resulting in over 70 fatalities and numerous injuries."
The Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) condemned the assault on Monday, attributing responsibility to government forces.
