Islamabad, Oct 13: A tragic train derailment occurred near Sher Shah Railway Station in Multan district, Punjab, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals and injuring over 30 others, as reported by local news outlets.

The Rehman Baba Express was en route to Peshawar when the accident took place. Hanif Abbasi, Pakistan's Minister for Railways, confirmed the fatalities following the derailment.

To investigate the incident, Abbasi has designated the federal government inspector of railways (FGIR) as the inquiry officer, according to reports from a leading Pakistani daily.

Locomotive driver Rizwan Abbas stated that the train was traveling at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour when he felt a sudden jolt as it passed through the Sher Shah station area.

He immediately applied the brakes and managed to halt the train.

"Upon exiting the locomotive and looking back, I noticed that several passenger coaches had derailed and were off the tracks. It was a horrifying sight," Abbas recounted.

This incident is part of a troubling trend, as Pakistan has experienced multiple train derailments in the past year, raising alarms about potential negligence and systemic issues within Pakistan Railways regarding the upkeep of trains and tracks.

Earlier this month, two passenger trains, Shalimar Express and Pakistan Express, narrowly avoided serious accidents after derailing.

In August, a derailment involving the Awam Express, which was traveling from Peshawar to Karachi, resulted in one fatality and injuries to at least 24 passengers near Lodhran railway station.

Lodhran Deputy Commissioner Lubna Nazir reported that the injured included 16 men, four women, and three children, as per local news sources.

In July, three coaches of the Jaffar Express derailed following an explosion on the railway track near Shikarpur in Sindh, injuring one passenger and causing significant disruptions to train services in the region.

The blast led to multiple coaches derailing, further complicating railway operations on that route.
