Tragic Shooting Claims Life of Montreal Police Officer
Montreal Police Officer Identified After Fatal Shooting
The Montreal police have confirmed the identity of the officer who lost his life in a shooting incident in the Côte-des-Neiges area on Monday. Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, aged 34, was recognized by the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) as a dedicated member of the force since 2021. The SPVM expressed their deep sorrow over his passing, labeling it a significant loss for the department. In a statement on their website, they noted, "He died while fulfilling his duty to protect the community." They further emphasized that his commitment and professionalism would be remembered fondly.
In honor of Constable Benredouane, flags at SPVM facilities have been lowered to half-mast, with the department stating, "Fallen, but never forgotten." The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a civilian and a suspect involved in the shooting. Additionally, another officer was injured but is currently in stable condition, while a civilian sustained minor injuries.
Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher reported that officers responded to the scene after a witness observed a "gun protruding from a window." The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with Quebec's Minister of Public Security, Ian Lafrenière, indicating that it appears to be a "domestic case" rather than an act of terrorism. The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), which oversees police conduct in Quebec, has been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the police response. Further details regarding the investigation have yet to be disclosed.
