Tragic Fire at Bangkok Pub Claims 27 Lives
Devastating Incident in Bangkok
Bangkok, July 13: A tragic fire erupted at a pub located near Lat Phrao Road in the Chatuchak district of Bangkok, resulting in the deaths of 27 individuals and leaving many others injured, according to reports from Thai media.
The blaze ignited around 11:57 p.m. local time and was extinguished shortly thereafter. Those injured were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the site at approximately 1:44 a.m. on Monday, revealing that the majority of the deceased succumbed to smoke inhalation, as reported by a news agency.
An inquiry into the fire's origin is currently in progress.
As of Monday, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reported that 22 out of the 63 injured individuals remained in critical condition following the devastating incident.
After assessing the scene, Chadchart informed local media that firefighters responded quickly to the emergency call, but the fire had already spread extensively within the pub by the time they arrived.
He noted that only six of the 27 victims had been officially identified so far, emphasizing the urgent need to reach out to the families of both the deceased and the injured.
Reports from local media indicated that rescuers discovered several mobile phones at the site, many of which were still receiving calls from concerned relatives and friends. Rescuers answered these calls to assist in identifying victims and notifying their families.
Survivors recounted to local media that thick smoke was first observed emanating from a circuit breaker near the stage. Following a power outage, an explosion occurred, leading to a rapid spread of flames.
Chadchart mentioned that an initial inspection revealed the pub's ceiling had been entirely consumed by the fire, while most plastic chairs remained largely undamaged, indicating that the swift spread of toxic smoke likely contributed significantly to the fatalities. He added that many victims may have become disoriented after the power failure and were unable to locate the emergency exits.
Thai media previously reported that the venue was licensed as a restaurant featuring live music and had two emergency exits. Authorities are currently investigating whether either exit was blocked at the time of the fire.
Reports indicate that the fire claimed the lives of 27 individuals, comprising nine men and 18 women, with most victims found near the pub's restrooms.
