The blast struck a crucial natural gas export terminal as workers attempted to resume operations following an earlier bombing by Iran during the ongoing conflict. This incident has led to at least 13 fatalities and left 66 others injured.

The explosion at the Ras Laffan industrial area poses a significant threat to global energy markets, given Qatar's status as a leading natural gas producer. The facility had been shut down due to Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz, which hindered the shipment of gas to international clients. As negotiations progressed towards a potential resolution of the conflict, Qatar initiated efforts to restart its export terminal, which ultimately triggered the explosion and subsequent fire at the Barzan gas supply facility, according to QatarEnergy.

Energy Minister Saad Sherida al-Kaabi addressed the media in Doha, clarifying that the incident was an accident and not a result of sabotage. He confirmed that the deceased included workers from India and Pakistan, while the injured comprised individuals from Qatar and various African and Asian countries. The extent of the damage caused by the explosion remains unclear.

Barzan Plant's Production Capacity

The Barzan facility has a production capacity of approximately 1.4 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day, primarily utilized for local electricity generation and powering essential water desalination plants in the arid Arabian Peninsula. Qatar holds nearly full ownership of the plant, with a minor stake held by ExxonMobil, which has yet to comment on the incident.

Earlier in March, an Iranian missile struck Ras Laffan, causing significant damage and a fire that was eventually brought under control. Production had already been halted due to previous Iranian attacks. Qatar shares a substantial offshore natural gas field in the Persian Gulf with Iran, which has significantly contributed to its wealth. This financial success has enabled Qatar to enhance its global standing by hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, establishing the Al Jazeera news network, and acting as an international mediator in various diplomatic efforts, including negotiations between Iran and the United States.
