Investigation into Vice Mayor's Death

Nancy Metayer Bowen, the Vice Mayor of Coral Springs, was discovered deceased at her residence on Wednesday morning, prompting an investigation by local authorities into a potential domestic violence situation. Police have confirmed the arrest of her husband, Stephen Bowen, in connection with the case.

According to Police Chief Brad Mock, officers responded to a wellness check at the home located on Northwest 127th Avenue around 10 a.m. Upon their arrival, they found the vice mayor unresponsive. Chief Mock stated that there are no additional suspects involved and assured the public that there is no ongoing threat, although he refrained from sharing further specifics during the press briefing.

Nancy Metayer Bowen made history as the first Black and Haitian-American woman to serve on the Coral Springs City Commission, having been elected in 2020 and re-elected in 2024. In November, she was appointed for a second one-year term as Vice Mayor. An environmental scientist by profession, Bowen previously worked with the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District and served as vice chair of Haitian Outreach for the Florida Democratic Party.

In response to her passing, party chair Nikki Fried expressed her shock, labeling the incident as 'sudden and horrific.' She praised Bowen as 'a brilliant barrier-breaker' who was dedicated to her community and committed to fostering a more equitable future.
