MEA Responds to Attack on MV Golden Leo

New Delhi: On Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed its condemnation regarding the assault on a commercial ship leaving Odesa port in Ukraine, which resulted in the deaths of four Indian citizens, with one individual in critical condition.

The MEA reported that the MV Golden Leo was targeted on the evening of July 19 while it was departing from Odesa. At that moment, there were 17 crew members aboard, including five Indians.

The statement from the MEA noted, “According to available information, four Indian nationals have sadly lost their lives, and one is currently hospitalized in critical condition. Our mission in Ukraine is actively monitoring the situation and is committed to providing all possible assistance to those affected. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a swift recovery to the injured.”

The MEA further condemned such attacks, emphasizing that targeting commercial vessels and jeopardizing the safety of innocent crew members is unacceptable and should be avoided.

Reports from the 'Kyiv Post' indicate that a Russian missile struck the Turkish-owned cargo ship Golden Leo, resulting in a total of 10 fatalities.

The Ukrainian Air Force stated that Russian forces launched three Kh-59/Kh-69 cruise missiles, with one hitting the starboard side of the Golden Leo, which sails under the Guinea-Bissau flag, causing a fire.

According to the Kyiv Post, eight sailors were rescued and transported to a hospital in Odesa.

The Russian Ministry of Defence announced on Sunday that their Armed Forces continued to target Ukrainian ports and vessels supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).

In an official statement on their Telegram channel, they mentioned that various missiles, including Anti-ship Oniks missiles and air-launched cruise missiles, struck port infrastructure.

Among the identified targets were two bulk carriers believed to be transporting military supplies near the Port of Odesa.
