Tragic Assault in Sudan: Over a Dozen Lives Lost Amid Ongoing Conflict
Recent Attack in Kordofan Claims Lives
Cairo: A recent assault by Sudanese paramilitary forces and their allied rebels in Kordofan's central region has resulted in the deaths of at least 14 individuals, including five children and two women, as reported by a medical organization on Sunday. This incident marks yet another tragic episode in the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their partners from the Sudan People's Liberation Movement North initiated a significant offensive on Saturday targeting Dilling, the capital of South Kordofan province. The military, which had recently lifted the RSF's siege on the city, claimed to have successfully repelled the attack.
According to the Sudan Doctors Network, which monitors the conflict, the RSF and their allies bombarded residential neighborhoods in Dilling amidst worsening humanitarian conditions. The prolonged assault resulted in injuries to at least 23 individuals, including seven additional children.
Dilling has been suffering from severe shortages resembling famine after enduring over two years of siege by the RSF, during which the paramilitary group restricted supplies and frequently bombed the area. The military managed to break this siege earlier this year.
The doctors' organization has raised alarms about a potential 'catastrophic scenario' unfolding, similar to the situation in el-Fasher, Darfur. The RSF launched an invasion in that region in October, an attack that UN experts described as having 'hallmarks of genocide.'
In el-Fasher, more than 6,000 individuals lost their lives within three days due to a surge of extreme violence unleashed by the RSF, which was characterized as 'shocking in its scale and brutality' by a report from the UN Human Rights Office.
Sudan descended into turmoil in April 2023 when a power struggle between the military and the RSF erupted into open conflict in Khartoum.
The ongoing war has claimed over 40,000 lives, according to UN estimates, although aid organizations suggest that the actual toll could be significantly higher.
Recent fighting has primarily focused on Darfur and the Kordofan region, with reports of deadly drone attacks occurring daily. As of mid-March, the UN Human Rights Office indicated that more than 500 civilians had been killed in drone strikes this year.
The conflict has been marred by horrific acts, including mass killings and gang rapes, which are currently under investigation by the International Criminal Court as potential war crimes and crimes against humanity.
