Tornado Hits Northwestern Indiana, Residents Urged to Seek Shelter

Tornado Warning Issued for Northwestern Indiana

On Thursday evening, a tornado was confirmed to be moving through northwestern Indiana, leading the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a Tornado Warning for northeastern Lake County. The NWS office in Chicago/Romeoville reported that the tornado was spotted over Schererville, close to Merrillville, at around 7:25 PM CDT, traveling northeast at about 30 mph.

Forecasters indicated that the tornado posed a serious risk to those in its vicinity, with the possibility of destructive winds and debris. They warned that mobile homes could face severe damage or destruction, and that roofs, windows, and vehicles might also be affected. Damage to trees was also anticipated.

Areas in the tornado's projected path included Merrillville, Hobart, Lake Station, and New Chicago, with Portage also likely to be affected as the storm progressed northeastward. The NWS confirmed the tornado's presence via radar and strongly advised residents to take immediate shelter. "To reiterate, a tornado is on the ground. TAKE COVER NOW!" the agency stated in its warning.

Officials recommended that individuals move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy structure and avoid windows. Those who were outside, in vehicles, or in mobile homes were urged to find the nearest substantial shelter to protect themselves from flying debris. The Tornado Warning was in effect until 8 PM CDT, as meteorologists continued to track the storm's movement across Lake County, Indiana.
