The Capital Grille to Close Its Doors at Westfield Old Orchard Mall
Closure Announcement of The Capital Grille
One of the prominent fine dining establishments at Westfield Old Orchard Mall is set to close after just three years of service. The Capital Grille, celebrated for its dry-aged steaks, fresh seafood, and extensive wine offerings, will cease operations at this location on May 31, as confirmed by a statement from its parent company, Darden Restaurants. The restaurant commenced operations in March 2023, occupying the space previously held by McCormick & Schmick’s, within a spacious 9,000-square-foot area on the mall's southeast side.
Official Statement Regarding the Closure
A representative from Darden Restaurants characterized the closure as a challenging yet necessary decision made after thorough deliberation. "This decision to close the restaurant was not made lightly, especially considering its impact on our employees and patrons," the statement read. "This does not reflect the quality of our staff's performance, and we are committed to assisting each team member in securing new employment opportunities." The company also noted that there are no current plans to shut down any other Capital Grille locations in the Chicago region, which includes establishments in Lombard, Rosemont, Schaumburg, and Streeterville.
Part of Darden's Strategic Changes
This closure is part of a broader strategy by Darden Restaurants, which earlier this year announced the permanent shutdown of 28 Bahama Breeze locations. Darden is also known for operating several other popular dining brands, including Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Yard House, Seasons 52, and Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Westfield Old Orchard Mall has yet to comment on the exit of The Capital Grille. This decision comes as many suburban shopping centers are adjusting to changing consumer behaviors, shifts in dining trends post-pandemic, and increasing operational expenses. While some dining concepts have flourished at Old Orchard, others have struggled with consistent customer traffic and profitability. Patrons who have appreciated the restaurant's sophisticated atmosphere and menu will have until the end of the month to visit the Old Orchard location before it permanently shuts down.
