Tensions Rise as Iranian Military Attacks Oil Tanker Off Oman: What You Need to Know
Incident Overview
New Delhi: An oil tanker registered under the Palau flag, carrying a crew of 15 Indian nationals, was attacked by the Iranian military near Oman’s Musandam peninsula, resulting in injuries to four crew members, according to reports from Omani officials on Sunday.
This incident follows a series of Iranian military actions primarily aimed at Israeli and American military installations across various Gulf nations, triggered by recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
The Iranian response intensified after the announcement of the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei due to the US-Israel attack.
The Omani Maritime Security Center reported that the oil tanker, named Skylight, was targeted approximately five nautical miles north of Khasab port in the Musandam region.
All 20 crew members, which included 15 Indians and five Iranians, were successfully evacuated, with four individuals receiving medical treatment for their injuries.
Sources indicate that the Indian government is actively communicating with relevant authorities regarding the situation.
Iran has vowed to retaliate for Khamenei's death, raising concerns about a potential escalation of conflict in the Middle East.
The joint US-Israel strikes on Iran occurred after prolonged negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear program yielded no significant results.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India expressed deep concern over the escalating situation in Iran and the Gulf region on Saturday.
They urged all parties involved to exercise caution, prevent further escalation, and prioritize civilian safety.
The MEA emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to reduce tensions and address the root causes of the conflict, while also calling for respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations.
