Peshawar, May 10: A suicide bombing and subsequent ambush at a police station in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province resulted in the deaths of at least 15 security personnel, with numerous others injured.

The attack occurred in the Bannu district when a vehicle packed with explosives approached a police post. Security forces opened fire, which triggered a devastating explosion, according to police reports.

The blast caused significant destruction, collapsing roofs of nearby homes and completely demolishing the police post, burying several officers under the debris.

Following the explosion, militants launched an assault on the police post, leading to intense gunfire between the two sides.

A police spokesperson confirmed that 15 security officials lost their lives in the attack, with several others sustaining injuries. The exact number of militants killed or captured remains unclear.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Chief Minister, Muhammad Sohail Afridi, condemned the "terrorist attack" and expressed his condolences for the victims. His office has instructed medical facilities to provide the best care for the injured.

Afridi described the assault on the police post as a "cowardly act" and emphasized that such violence would not diminish the resolve of law enforcement or the public.

In a related incident last week, security forces in South Waziristan shot a suspected militant approaching a checkpoint in an explosive-laden vehicle. The vehicle collided with a building, resulting in an explosion that injured seven individuals, though no fatalities were reported.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has a history of unrest fueled by militant activities, the movement of fighters from Afghanistan, and ongoing military operations.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the latest attack. However, the Pakistani government has previously attributed such violence to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, particularly following the collapse of a ceasefire agreement in 2022.
