Strengthening Ties: Sri Lankan Delegation Engages with Indian Foreign Secretary

Bilateral Discussions in New Delhi

New Delhi, July 16: A delegation of 24 Sri Lankan representatives convened with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in New Delhi on Wednesday to explore the enhancement of bilateral relations between the two countries.

This group, comprising leaders from 14 different political parties in Sri Lanka, commenced their two-week visit to India on the same day.

During the discussions, Foreign Secretary Misri underscored the crucial role that young leaders play as vital contributors to strengthening the relationship and shaping future collaborations.

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on X, "A 24-member delegation of young political leaders from 14 political parties of Sri Lanka called on Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri as they began their two-week-long programme in India."

The ministry further noted, "Foreign Secretary emphasised their valuable role in deepening the India-Sri Lanka partnership as stakeholders in its future roadmap."

The meeting also addressed regional geopolitical dynamics and the security agreements established between India and Sri Lanka.

Just last week, India's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, met with the Sri Lankan delegation of young political leaders from various parties to discuss initiatives aimed at fostering partnerships for a shared future.

The delegation includes Deputy Speaker Rizvie Salih, 20 Members of Parliament from different parties, and four senior officials from the Sri Lankan Parliament, including the Secretary General.

India and Sri Lanka boast a relationship that spans over 2,500 years, characterized by a rich civilizational and historical bond.

Sri Lanka holds a pivotal position in India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy and the MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision.

Earlier in April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sri Lanka, where he engaged in fruitful discussions with President Anura Kumara Disanayaka.

PM Modi was the first foreign leader to undertake a state visit to Sri Lanka since President Disanayaka assumed office in September 2024.

During their meeting, both leaders engaged in comprehensive discussions, both in restricted and delegation formats, aimed at further solidifying the special and close bilateral ties rooted in shared history and strong people-to-people connections.

PM Modi also announced a significant initiative to train an additional 700 Sri Lankan citizens annually in capacity building and economic support, alongside finalizing Bilateral Amendatory Agreements on Debt Restructuring.

The Prime Minister reiterated Sri Lanka's significance in India's Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision MAHASAGAR, affirming New Delhi's ongoing commitment to support the island nation's economic recovery and stabilization.

The bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka are well-established and diverse, covering all areas of contemporary importance.

The shared cultural and social heritage, along with extensive interactions between the citizens of both nations, lays a strong foundation for a multifaceted partnership.
