Sri Lanka Supports US-Iran Dialogue for Lasting Peace in West Asia

Sri Lanka has voiced its support for the ongoing dialogue between the US and Iran, expressing hope that the recent ceasefire will lead to enduring peace in West Asia. A US delegation, including Jared Kushner, is in Islamabad for peace talks mediated by Pakistan, following a two-week ceasefire announcement. The Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry welcomed this development as a significant step towards reducing regional tensions and alleviating humanitarian suffering. They encouraged all parties to seize this opportunity for a comprehensive peace process that ensures long-term stability in the region.
 

Sri Lanka's Stance on US-Iran Peace Talks


Colombo: On Saturday, Sri Lanka expressed its support for the ongoing dialogue between Iran and the United States, emphasizing its hope that the current diplomatic efforts following a temporary ceasefire will pave the way for lasting peace in the West Asian region.


A delegation from the US, which includes special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law, is currently in Islamabad. They are joined by an Iranian negotiating team led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, participating in peace talks mediated by Pakistan, just days after the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the US.


The Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka welcomed the ceasefire announcement and the upcoming discussions, labeling it a crucial step towards reducing regional tensions and addressing the severe humanitarian crises stemming from the conflict.


The ministry urged all involved parties to take advantage of this moment to pursue a comprehensive peace process that guarantees long-term stability and security for all communities in the area.


While not naming the mediating nations, the ministry acknowledged the diplomatic initiatives that contributed to the ceasefire and the planned negotiations.


Sri Lanka also expressed gratitude for the roles played by all parties whose diplomatic endeavors have been vital in facilitating this important dialogue.
