Shubhankar Sharma and Anirban Lahiri Gear Up for DP World India Championship

As the DP World India Championship approaches, Shubhankar Sharma and Anirban Lahiri are preparing to face a competitive international field. Sharma, buoyed by a recent victory, aims to build on his momentum, while Lahiri seeks to revitalize his game after a seven-week break. Both golfers have unique stories and strategies as they head into the tournament at the Delhi Golf Club, where they hope to make a significant impact. With a prize pool of $4 million and a lineup featuring several Major champions, the stakes are high. Will they convert their preparation into success on the course?

Shubhankar Sharma's Confidence Boost

A recent domestic win has revitalized Shubhankar Sharma's confidence as he heads into the DP World India Championship. Anirban Lahiri, on the other hand, is relying on a seven-week hiatus to rejuvenate his game. Both Indian golfers are set to compete against a stellar international lineup at the Delhi Golf Club from October 15-18. Sharma, a two-time winner on the DP World Tour, managed to break a frustrating streak by returning to the basics of his game last week. Meanwhile, Lahiri has utilized his break to focus on the physical and mental aspects of his long career, acknowledging that his recent season was one of his weakest, as stated in a press release from the championship.

Sharma's Strategy for Success

For Sharma, the focus is on leveraging last week's victory rather than viewing it as a complete fix. He had been struggling to translate his practice into results, leading to missed cuts that affected his confidence. "My main goal last week was to build momentum for this week. I wasn't fixated on winning; I just wanted to reconnect with my game and friends," Sharma explained. He identified that the key issues were fundamental, and he successfully addressed them. The win was crucial as he felt he had been working hard without tackling the core problems in his game.

Lahiri's Fresh Perspective

Lahiri's situation is different; he has not participated in a tournament for about seven weeks, taking a break after a disappointing season. He expressed dissatisfaction with his performance, calling it one of his weakest in recent years. Instead of jumping back into full practice, he dedicated the first part of his break to fitness and mental recovery, also enjoying time with family after extensive travel on the professional circuit. "I'm feeling fresh and mentally in a good space," he shared.

Course Familiarity and Game Plan

Lahiri's familiarity with the Delhi Golf Club dates back to 1999, when he played his first tournament there. He recalls the early days fondly, sharing rounds with fellow golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar. "There's a sense of familiarity and being at home, which is wonderful," he noted. The excitement from young fans has further motivated him. On the course, Lahiri believes that precision will be key, especially with the redesigned greens that require solid approach play. He emphasized the importance of keeping the ball in the fairway to create birdie opportunities.

Facing the Challenge Ahead

Sharma's goal is clear: to compete against the best rather than shy away from challenges. "I want to play with the best; it's about embracing discomfort and performing under pressure," he stated. After two challenging seasons, his recent victory provides a reason for optimism. Lahiri, refreshed and eager, is ready to make the most of a venue that feels like home. Both players now face the crucial question: can they transform their preparation and renewed confidence into four strong rounds when the championship kicks off on Thursday?
