New York, June 19: Local authorities reported that a shooting incident in Times Square, New York City, resulted in one person being injured.
According to police, a suspect has been apprehended. The New York Fire Department confirmed that the injured individual was taken to a hospital, but no additional information has been disclosed.
The shooting took place around 3:40 p.m. local time (1940 GMT) on Thursday, shortly after the New York Knicks' championship parade in Lower Manhattan, where nearly 10,000 police officers were present for security.
Footage from the scene depicted chaos as people fled or sought shelter amidst the commotion, with audible screams and shouts filling the air.
Another video appeared to show at least two individuals in black clothing entering the busy intersection and firing shots.
Authorities cordoned off the area with barricades and tape for investigation, as reported by a news agency.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) noted that the area was bustling with visitors attending World Cup events, many of whom had arrived in the city since the tournament commenced last week.
Social media videos captured the moment gunfire erupted, causing panic among tourists and bystanders who hurried to find safety. The sound of gunfire echoed through the crowded area as people scrambled to escape.
Witnesses were seen fleeing while the suspects ran down the street, pursued by police who were already stationed in the heavily trafficked area. The shooting occurred just a short distance from a police vehicle parked nearby.
This incident follows another shooting in Times Square on June 16, which occurred during celebrations for the New York Knicks’ first NBA championship in 53 years, leading to chaos as fans scattered.
Videos from that night showed gunfire erupting in the entertainment hub, prompting hundreds to flee. Separate footage indicated that officers recovered a loaded firearm from an individual at the scene.
One widely circulated video captured at least seven gunshots near the intersection of 42nd Street and Broadway, where large crowds had gathered to celebrate the historic victory.
A 17-year-old boy was injured in that shooting and was transported to a hospital in a police vehicle.
