On Thursday morning, a shooting occurred at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, resulting in two individuals being hospitalized in critical condition and the shooter deceased. The university's emergency alert system indicated that the incident took place just before 10:49 AM local time. The attack unfolded inside Constant Hall, which houses the college of business and is one of the busiest buildings on campus during regular class hours.

Authorities confirmed that the shooter was dead by the time the situation was under control, although the circumstances surrounding the shooter's death remain unclear. As of Thursday, the identity of the shooter had not been disclosed.

Following the incident, all classes on campus were canceled for the day after officials determined there was no ongoing threat. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger stated that her administration was closely monitoring the situation and deploying state resources to support both ODU and Norfolk. She shared updates on social media, emphasizing the collaboration with local emergency services.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives confirmed that agents were present at the scene to assist with the investigation. As of Thursday afternoon, the motive for the shooting had not yet been determined.

This incident at ODU adds to a troubling trend of gun violence on American campuses. According to the advocacy organization Everytown for Gun Safety, there have been at least 19 reported incidents of gunfire on U.S. campuses, ranging from elementary schools to universities, since the beginning of 2026.
