Changing Winter Tourism Trends in Himachal Pradesh

MANDI:
An unexpected warm spell in December, coupled with a lack of significant snowfall, has transformed winter tourism dynamics in Himachal Pradesh this year. With traditional winter destinations lacking snow, travelers are venturing further afield, with Shinkula Pass and its surroundings gaining attention as a fresh winter getaway. Situated at an elevation of 16,703 feet, Shinkula Pass serves as a link between the Zanskar region of Ladakh and the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh.

Previously, attractions like Atal Tunnel, Sissu, and the Koksar area were the primary draws for winter tourists. However, this season's clear skies and mild daytime temperatures have encouraged visitors to explore Shinkula Pass and its vicinity, providing a unique experience of the high Himalayas. The region's dramatic mountain scenery, open roads, and breathtaking views have captivated travelers seeking alternative winter escapes.

Earlier this month, due to sporadic weather changes and safety concerns, the district administration temporarily halted tourist vehicle access to Shinkula Pass. This decision negatively affected tourism-related activities in Tod Valley, where local economies heavily rely on seasonal tourism. Concerned stakeholders in the tourism sector reached out to local representatives for assistance.

MLA Anuradha Rana's Intervention

Zila parishad member Dorje Larje reported that tourism entrepreneurs from Tod Valley requested local MLA Anuradha Rana to address the issue with the authorities. Responding to their plea, the MLA engaged in discussions with the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of Lahaul-Spiti. Following her intervention, the necessary notifications were issued, allowing tourist access to Shinkula Top to resume.

Zila Parishad chairperson Veena Devi and Block Committee chairman Vipin Shashni noted that tourism activities around Shinkula Top have picked up again. They highlighted that the influx of tourists has created new job opportunities for local taxi drivers, homestay operators, hotel owners, and food-van vendors, providing much-needed economic relief during the winter months.

Expressing her satisfaction with the developments, Lahaul-Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana shared on Facebook that it is heartening to see Shinkula Pass emerging as a winter tourism destination. She emphasized that favorable weather and improved access have opened up new avenues for tourism in high-altitude border regions.

The MLA further stated that promoting tourism in areas like Shinkula will bolster the local economy, create job opportunities for youth, and showcase the natural beauty of Lahaul-Spiti to a broader audience, all while prioritizing visitor safety.

Tourism analysts suggest that this winter signifies a shift in travel patterns influenced by changing weather conditions. Even without heavy snowfall, clear winter days, scenic drives, and less crowded locations are attracting tourists to off-the-beaten-path areas like Shinkula Pass, indicating a gradual diversification of winter tourism in Himachal Pradesh.
