Russia Supports Iran's Authority Over the Strait of Hormuz
Russia's Endorsement of Iran's Control
Russia has formally expressed its support for Iran's governance over the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Vassily Nebenzia, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, stated that Iran possesses the legitimate right to manage the Strait. He emphasized that Iran can restrict maritime traffic and oversee the Strait while accusing Western nations of hypocrisy and acts akin to piracy.
The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital link between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, with approximately 20% of the global oil and liquefied natural gas supply traversing this route. Nebenzia remarked, “There was an attempt to pin full responsibility on Iran as if it was Iran which attacked its neighbours. In times of war, a coastal state that is under attack may limit navigation in its territorial waters for the purpose of security.”
In his remarks, Nebenzia likened Western nations to pirates, criticizing European countries for their support of Ukrainian attacks on Russian vessels in the Black Sea. He stated, “Unlike pirates who raise their black flags with a skull and crossbones in their vessels, Western countries are attempting to conceal their lawless actions with references to unilateral coercive measures.”
Since the onset of the conflict on February 28, Iran has effectively restricted passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Although Iran initially proposed to reopen the waterway, it later retracted this offer due to the US naval blockade on its ports. During a recent diplomatic visit by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to Pakistan and Oman, Tehran suggested it would consider reopening the Strait under specific conditions: 1. The US must lift its blockade on Iran and its ports, 2. The cessation of hostilities in the Middle East, and 3. Delaying discussions regarding Tehran's nuclear program to a later stage in diplomatic negotiations.
However, US officials have indicated to media outlets that President Trump and his national security team remain doubtful about Iran's proposal. The White House confirmed that Trump's national security team has deliberated on the offer, with Trump expected to address it in the near future.
