Rising Tensions in West Asia Following US-Iran Strikes
Escalation of Conflict in West Asia
Tehran: On Monday, tensions in West Asia intensified after the United States conducted new strikes against Iran, prompting a strong response from Tehran. The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned these actions, asserting that they threaten international peace and security. In an official statement, the ministry indicated that the recent US attacks have undermined all attempts to reduce tensions and foster stability in the region.
According to the ministry, these aggressive actions represent a clear violation of the United Nations Charter, specifically Article 2, paragraph 4, and pose a significant risk to global peace. Furthermore, the Iranian Foreign Ministry pointed out that the US breached a ceasefire agreement just 25 days after it was signed, accusing Washington of war crimes.
The ministry also criticized the US for meddling in Iran's domestic affairs, which has led to increased insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz and disrupted international shipping routes. It claimed that the US has transformed regional countries into bases for its unlawful military operations against Iran.
Additionally, the Iranian Ministry expressed disappointment with the United Nations for failing to intervene against US aggression. It urged the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council to fulfill their responsibilities in addressing violations of international peace and security and to hold accountable those responsible for crimes against the Iranian populace.
As the conflict escalated, both the US and Iran engaged in missile and drone strikes over the weekend. Iran targeted US military installations throughout the Gulf and announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments. Reports indicate that Iran's IRGC claimed to have successfully destroyed fuel tanks, Patriot air defense systems, and a strategic FPS radar system at two air bases in Kuwait, along with several facilities at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain.
