Conflict Over Lebanon's Role in Iran-US Negotiations

A heated exchange has unfolded between Tehran and Beirut following Lebanese President Joseph Aoun's assertion that Iran is exploiting Lebanon as a "bargaining chip" in its dealings with the United States. Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, vehemently denied this allegation, stating that if it were true, a deal would have been reached long ago. He urged Lebanon's leaders to focus on the nation's true adversaries.

In an interview with CNN, President Aoun expressed his frustration, claiming, "It’s not your country, it’s our country... (Iran is) using Lebanon as a bargaining chip in their negotiation with US," while referencing the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He emphasized the Lebanese people's desire for peace, stating, "We are fed up and we want to live in peace," and highlighted their right to live without the threat of destruction every few years.

This exchange occurs against a backdrop of rising tensions in West Asia, with Lebanon positioned precariously amid the broader Iran-Israel conflict.

Middle East Tensions Intensify

In a related development, tensions in the Middle East have surged as the IRGC announced missile strikes targeting "enemy bases in the region" in response to US military actions against Iranian positions near the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that American forces intercepted four Iranian drones aimed at the Strait of Hormuz.
