Republican Sentiment Shifts Amid Economic Concerns and Iran Conflict
Republican Views on Trump's Economic Management
A recent AP-NORC survey reveals that Republicans are increasingly dissatisfied with President Donald Trump's economic policies, although they largely continue to support him as the conflict with Iran persists. Currently, approximately 60% of Republicans express approval for Trump's economic management, a decline from nearly 80% in February, prior to the onset of the Iran conflict. Trump's overall approval rating has seen a slight uptick to 37%, up from 33% in April, yet he remains significantly unpopular among non-Republicans. Almost all Democrats disapprove of his performance, along with about 70% of independents.
Economic Challenges Persist
Only around one-third of adults in the U.S. approve of Trump's economic handling, a figure consistent with late April but lower than the 40% approval at the beginning of his second term. The ongoing war with Iran has led to increased gasoline prices, exacerbating economic challenges. While many Republicans still support Trump's overall strategy, there is a growing sense of dissatisfaction. A Republican voter from Wisconsin mentioned that he is now assisting his teenage son with gas expenses due to the price hikes associated with the Iran situation.
Immigration Gains Favor
Immigration is re-emerging as a strong point for Trump, with about 45% of U.S. adults approving of his management in this area, an increase from earlier this year. Among Republicans, support for Trump's immigration policies remains robust, with around 80% approval.
Foreign Policy and Approval Ratings
Trump's handling of the Iran conflict continues to be met with disapproval from the general public, with only about one-third of Americans approving of his approach to the war. Similarly, around one-third approve of his overall foreign policy. A 22-year-old independent voter leaning Republican from Georgia expressed her disapproval of Trump's stance on Iran, stating that the costs currently outweigh the benefits.
Poll Insights
The AP-NORC poll was conducted from May 14 to 18, surveying 1,117 adults, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points. These findings emerge as Trump grapples with the implications of the Iran conflict, particularly its effects on everyday Americans through rising energy costs.
